EFFECTS OF THE INTERNET TO MY LIFE AS A STUDENT

INTRODUCTION

This topic is similar to the previous topic of discussion in this blog. why do i say so ?. this is because if we look at this from all perspectives, we will notice that is like a two way traffic because the internet has;contributed both negatively and positively in my life as a student.

Lets us take a look at a research carried out on this topic at Boston College and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. According to this research,Analyzing test performance and computer uses of 986 fourth grade students from 55 classrooms in nine Massachusetts school districts, the study found that the more regularly students use computers to write papers for school, the better they performed on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Systems English/Language Arts exam. This positive effect occurred despite the fact that students were not allowed to use computers for the test.(http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/19387.php).

That was a research that constituted and views of many people. Let me outline the positive effects to my life as a student:

  • I do research for various assignments and sometimes get answers more quickly than using a library.
  • Equally,I send and receive email, allowing them to communicate more quickly than with postal mail
  • Also, I take coursework and related tests without needing to attend class on the class' schedule.
  • With the internet, i can interact with my school in various ways as most of announcement as course work are posted on social media like Facebook and other online campus services.
  • In the course of looking up for the solution of any assignment, it gives me a broader knowledge of related information to what at aimed at.
  • The internet has made me to have less voluminous source of information as books (hard copies) occupy much space in my room but now i have books on soft copies and very portable.
One library stored in just one notebook

However, as i said before the internet also has it negatives effects on the life of a student and i am not left out.

  • Most often than not when ever i am connected to the internet i turn to use the social media much instead of doing my coursework. Social medias such as Facebook  Twitter  Skype and messengers turn to deviate me from studying to chatting and sharing all what not with friends
  • Also, I turn to use the abbreviations and slags i use to discus with friends in the course of writing very formal documents and when speaking with important persons and in formal places
  • The internet has made the library almost if not totally indispensable to my academic activities and by so doing has made my vocabulary not up to standard as most systems provide auto correction of spellings and limit my abilities to master the right spelling of the words
  • Spending so much time in front of the screen has exposed me to so much radiations and liable and vulnerable to infections such as cancer

Effects of computer radiations.

 CONCLUSION
The internet however is a very fast, reliable source of getting information for a student but then it is left for the individual to be conscious and self determine to do just that right thing at the appropriate time. One need to be very precise and self disciplined to whatever one needs to do over the internet as it has "the good, the bad and the ugly" . All-in-all, knowing what to do when connected to the internet at work time is the best way one can keep him/her self from all the tremendously numerous distractions of the internet .
